What is a Yoga Diet?

Yoga is not just about making different postures to maintain a good balance, but one needs to understand that to achieve a balanced body one must practice a good diet as well. Eating junk food or oiled food is not going to help your body anyway, one needs to know how to follow a yoga diet.

If we talk about yoga or a yogic diet, it is all about plant-based meals.  In 200 hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh, one will learn about such meals and diet plans which will help one to improve their health and aura. Many people often mistake a vegan diet for being the same as a yogic or yoga diet. But what does it mean?

What is a Yogic Diet?

Sattvic meal.

There are three qualities called ‘gunas’

  • Raja
  • Tama 
  • Sattva

These three qualities are present in all things, but different amounts. Rajasic foods are hot, bitter, dry, salty, or spicy. Such food makes the mind excited. Tamasic foods include meat, alcohol, tobacco, garlic, onions, fermented foods, etc. Sattvic food is the purest diet, It develops the body and maintains a peaceful aura. A Sattvic diet will lead to true health and a healthy mind.

Sattvic Foods Include:

  • wholemeal bread
  • fresh fruit and vegetables
  • pure fruit juices
  • milk
  • butter and cheese
  • nuts
  • seeds
  • sprouted seeds
  • honey and herb teas

Vegetarian Diet

The problem for meat eaters is the fear of not receiving enough protein. Yet meat-eaters obtain the worst quality protein from their food as the protein is dead or dying.

Animal protein contains too much uric acid and other toxins to be broken down by the liver and leads to problems such as arthritis and cancer. Yoga Teachers taught, Nuts, dairy products, leafy greens, and legumes are full of high-quality protein and full of cellulose which is lifeless and does not pollute the body.

Chemicals and Stimulants Free Food

Choose organic and avoid caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, and artificial sweeteners. These products are not healthy for the body and making it more difficult to concentrate.

Fresh Foods

Always prepare a fresh meal. Packaged and left-over foods should be avoided. Preparing food helps one to engage time and helps to gain one to know about their body.

Diet Should be at Regular Intervals

If you train your body to eat at regular times, it will better utilize its energy throughout the day. The body has cycles and functions best when these cycles are regular. The same goes for our mealtimes. Avoiding food two hours before exercise or sleep. The proper time for digestion before sleep helps to keep the mind clear.

Fasting

In 300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh, our yoga instructors recommend choosing one day each week to fast. A fast can be strict, not allowing anything to enter the body, it can include water and fruit juices. Keep in mind that the goal of your fast is to purify the body and mind.

Ahimsa

Ahimsa or nonviolence should be applied to the food we eat. Health choices that do not harm other people, animals, or the planet take awareness. Keep in mind that small changes in the way you eat and live can have greater impacts. Your body is a temple! Keep food choices simple, pure, fresh, and use your best. Your inner self knows best.
